The National Institute for Materials Science has invited domestic and international students enrolled in Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD programs for a fully funded Internship Program in 2026. The program aims to provide practical technical experience to outstanding individuals from the field of materials science at NIMS. 

The National Institute for Materials Science is a prominent national research institute, founded in 2001 by merging two research institutes. It is known for its focus on basic and innovative research to address global issues. The study is conducted on metals, semiconductors, ceramics, and organic & biomaterials.

A total of 100 domestic and international students registered in undergraduate or graduate programs receive the NIMS Internship each year. The program lasts 90 days (3 months). Interested students must contact an appropriate researcher to get shortlisted for the internship by 30 January 2026.

Benefits of an Internship 

The National Institute for Materials Science offers the following benefits for the Internship Program in Japan.

  • Interns will receive a daily allowance of 2,650 JPY.
  • Interns will receive free housing near the university till the completion of the internship program.
  • Interns will receive one round-trip airfare ticket and one round-trip bus ticket.
  • Interns will not have to pay an application fee.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants for the Internship Program at the National Institute for Materials Science in Japan must meet the criteria below. 

  • Students from all nationalities are eligible to apply.
  • You must be enrolled in a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD degree in your home country for the duration of the internship.
  • You must possess an excellent academic profile.

  • To participate in this internship, you need to find an appropriate supervisor whose work aligns with your interests by visiting the NIMS Researcher Directory Service (SAMURAI).
  • Request hosting from your preferred supervisor via email by illustrating your intent to apply for the NIMS Internship 2026.
  • If the supervisor is interested, email the required documents listed.
  • The shortlisted applicants may undergo an interview after review, after which the supervisor will submit their official application to the NIMS Graduate Program Section on their behalf.
  • The supervisor will let you know about the results around mid-March 2026.
