UTokyo offers international students the opportunity to pursue research in Natural Sciences or related fields through its fully funded Research Internship program in Japan. Only students enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program at the institute outside Japan can apply. 

The University of Tokyo is the most renowned and the first national university of Japan, founded in 1877. It is a leading research organisation offering comprehensive academic disciplines and has been home to several prominent alums, including Nobel laureates and Japanese prime ministers. 

The internship will span around 6 weeks (04 June 2026 to 31 July 2026). Interns will receive a one-time allowance and free accommodation during their stay, as well as the opportunity to work in high-tech labs alongside brilliant individuals from around the world. The deadline to apply for the UTRI program is 07 January 2026.

  • Fellows from Asia/Eastern Russia/Oceania/Pacific Regions will receive a one-time allowance of 140,000 JPY to cover round-trip airfare to Japan and daily expenses.
  • Europe/Western Russia/North America will receive a one-time allowance of 160,000 JPY to cover round-trip airfare to Japan and daily expenses.
  • Latin America/Caribbean/Africa/Middle East will receive a one-time allowance of 170,000 JPY to cover round-trip airfare to Japan and daily expenses.
  • Fellows will receive free housing during their stay (43 nights).

Applicants for the Research Internship Program at the University of Tokyo in Japan must meet the given qualifications.

  • You must be enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s program in Natural Sciences or related fields at a university outside of Japan.
  • You must have an aim to achieve long-term career goals in science.
  • You must be committed to attending the entire program.
